Privilege, Power, and Difference, A. Johnson

3TP-
  • "We must change how we think to change how we act, to change how we participate in the world." This will change the world. True, true, true. How one acts influences how others feel, are perceived, and are respected in our communities.
  • "....treat one another with decency, respect, and appreciate, if not support one another, the best we have in us."
  • "People feel comfortable showing up and feeling good about themselves and one another."
  • "It felt risky. Can we talk about this and us?" This is so true. I've been in situations when I was unsure what to say, to not offend. Could I ask, "Is it okay if I say this?"
  • "problems that belong to all of us" Collectively, we are all responsible with our community. Large and small.
  • Diversity Wheel- characteristics that shapes everyone's lives. There's no getting around this. It is what it is. Because of these characteristics we are already pre-limited, pre- privileged, pre-categorized in society.

Argument Statement

“This author, A. Johnson, argues that in order for society to change, we must look within ourselves, see how we are contributing to the current situation, (of treating people differently) and most importantly be honest with ourselves. Although we did not create the diversity in this world, we may be a part of it now. How do we go about this? How does one know what to DO?
